Instrument Monitoring App

Currently our users are not able to monitor real time what is going on in their labs. This monitoring app will aid in the better functioning of the lab. From having the equipment running with no problems and if anything is out of the ordinary the app will let the user know, thus preventing malfunctioning and loss of time for the researchers.

MY ROLE
User research, user stories, sketching, wireframing, visual design, interaction design, prototyping

PRODUCT VISION

FOR Research scientists and lab managers
WHO need a constant and reliable system monitoring
THE Smart2Pure Pro Cloud  IS A water purification system monitoring app
THAT provides a remote system and consumable status
UNLIKE Millipore LIMS system
OUR PRODUCT provides a consumer friendly approach to remote monitoring

I was involved with the product owner and stakeholders for all of the steps in this project. I also developed user personas and the product vision in an offsite road map.

GOALS

Immediate notifications
The application should save a record of all notifications and connect to the users email to notify any concerning event

Real time Access
Users need to monitor every aspect of their instrument such as water tank levels, filters health and overall summary of usage.

USERS

We needed to take into account our two main users, despite having different needs. The Lab manager is more concerned with not having down time in the lab as it costs the company money, on the other hand the research scientist also does not want down time but for a different reason: this paralyzes their work and their research may be affecting sometimes without them realizing it.

DESIGN PROCESS

I worked with a great team of experts in the instruments’ functions and users’ activities in a lab. Alongside the development team we created a road map to guide the product development from a common problem to a solution. From user interviews we found out their priorities and were able to start with our users needs into account.

At first I started with this rough screen reusing components of our Sketch library, later on we redefined different areas.

FEATURES

Later on I iterated some designs and discussed new features to be added with the stakeholders of the project. Here I showcase a simple way to monitor the instrument and the visible changes when the is something wrong and it must be attended, I set some rules to prioritize the severity of alarms and I also added a convenient way to order for more filters through the Thermo Fisher site. It was also needed to show the users instrument in a list that could be collapsed in case they have more than one instrument and need to monitor them in a convenient manner.

CONCLUSION

This project gave me the opportunity to reach out to many experts in different fields and learn more about the importance of a smooth workflow and how it can affect not only the corporation that is researching a topic but also it affects the lives of the people that are benefited with the cures and solutions that scientists do.
