Instrument Report App

This application was designed to connect an specific instrument to the Thermo Fisher Cloud platform. This enables scientists and lab managers to remotely monitor and create reports of different types of analyzed titration data.

INTRO

How could we design a solution to improve the day to day activities of our users while taking advantages of our new Cloud platform?

Currently lab managers and bench scientists that use Thermo Scientific Titrator instrument need to download manually their results via a memory stick and then save into their computers. This method could compromise the data integrity and be time consuming. Using the Cloud ecosystem we could avoid this problem and bring more perks in the safe keeping of the information and having access to it from anywhere.

GOALS

Access
Easy and reliable access to the instrument’s information

Report customization
Capability to edit and create reports from the instrument’s data

USERS

I met up frequently with the Product Owner and stakeholders to understand how our users would interact with the application and how would we use our available technology to do so. I designed a user persona, customer journey maps and an overall map to showcase the connectivity between all of the elements.

After modeling our user persona and customer journey map I developed first of all the architecture of how we would connect  and access the instrument information from the cloud.

DESIGN PROCESS

I then took the PO requirements for the information to be displayed in the application and designed a low fi wireframe with Balsamiq to display the overall experience of it

I designed and worked in an overall flow that could help our users visualize and manipulate the information to get reports and have them saved in their cloud account with no risk of losing them. The information to be displayed was curated to align with the users goals. Small screens were taken into account to have the best responsiveness that we could manage.
Sketch was used for the high fidelity mock ups and Zeplin for sharing them with the development team.

FEATURES

The data from the instrument can be processed and categorize automatically in the dashboard. one of the most important features of the application is to customize a report.
Later on we added the feature to download and archive saved methods from the instrument.

It was very important for the Lab Managers to be able to deselect automatically the blank parameters in order for the reports to be as useful as possible.
I also included a favorite selection option for our users that use the report feature often and need a recurrent selection.

CONCLUSION

This project presented me with various challenges such as learning a new scientific domain, understanding and improving the day to day work of our users and getting to know the technology and connectivity issues that can happen in any web application. I enjoyed very much each challenge because it helped me to learn and voice concerns on time.
